In the early 1990's, Joe and Kathy Jensen started their dream of bringing country music to Minnesota in the form of a show with video taping for television. The show was shown in the Twin Cities on KLGT-TV (Channel 23) in 1992 and 1994, 15 months of broadcasting. At that time, shows were taped at various locations around Minnesota and Wisconsin, with the associated costs of setting up and tearing down after shows. With cost becoming a concern, Joe and Kathy decided to look at purchasing a building that would permanently house Midwest Country. In addition to making it more cost effective, they could provide an ideal place in which to enjoy the "Softer / Gentler" side of country, giving the audience the acoustics, lighting, and the atmosphere which would never be forgotten.
In August of 1997, the Jensens found such a place in Sandstone, MN at the historic Opera House, the Vogue Theater. With the installation of track lighting, sound and television production facilities, the theater opened on September 26, 1997 and has become an major attraction in the area. Joe and Kathy, with the help of their family, bringing to the area such great entertainers as Connie Smith, Jack Greene, Michael Twitty, and Tommy Cash, all from Nashville/Grand Ole Opry. Midwest Country also continues to spotlight some of the brightest stars of the Upper Midwest such as, Johnny Voit, Marvin Rainwater, Sherwin and Pam Linton, Marilyn Sellars, Dave Dudley, as well as the Midwest Country house band, Leroy Glazier and the Midwest Country Band. The Midwest Country Singers, which include Betty Lee, Judy Broman, Duke Larson, Billye Jane Kruse, Sharon Lee, Don Baxter, Dale Henry, and many others, are always a favorite with audiences. Midwest Country also continues to bring in the finest country artists from Nashville, including Kitty Wells, Johnny Wright, Jett Williams, Stonewall Jackson, and many more.
